Session Q - (BoF) BIUP meeting
As in former editions of the NBIC conferences, the Bioinformatics Industrial User Platform (BIUP) will organise a BIUP meeting specifically aimed at conference participants from industry. The meeting is planned on May 21, during the Birds of a Feather sessions but starts earlier at 12:45 - 14:15 h (during the lunch break).
The meeting will include two talks on practical insights from industrial participants of Oxford Nanopore’s MinION early access program.

Oxford NanoPore Sequencing @ KeyGene
Raymond Hulzink, Keygene N.V., Agro Business Park 90, 6708 PW Wageningen
As part of the Minion Access Program (MAP), KeyGene has tested the Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) MinIONTM nanopore sequencing device. The MinION reads sequences of individual DNA strands through biological nanopores by measuring changes in the ionic current. Due to its single molecule detection principle and the absence of a prior amplification step during the library preparation, nanopore sequencing has the potential to generate unbiased reads, the length of which is only limited by the lengths of the molecules in the sample. Nanopore sequencing therefore holds great promise to more accurately resolve repeats and directly assemble complex genomic regions. A state of the art and future perspective will be given about Nanopore sequencing, including the experimental challenges and applications in the field of plant breeding. As practical example, we will present our initial results on mapping of and de novo assembly of plant BAC clones from MinION data.
Scaffolding using long nanopore reads
Hans J. Jansen1 and Christiaan V. Henkel2; 1 ZF-Genomics, 2 Leiden University
ZF-Genomics has joined Oxford Nanopore Technologies Minion Access Program (MAP) in april 2014 to evaluate the usefulness of Nanopore sequencing to scaffold and complete existing draft genomes based on short read technology. It is our intention to use this technology to improve the vertebrate draft genomes we’ve generated in the past. The rapid development of the MinION system to where it is now will be discussed together with an example of our scaffolding approach. New developments in sample preparation and sequencing which will be revealed at the London Calling event will also be discussed.
Session H - Bioinf and SysBio in Practice
On May 20 (14:45 - 16:15 h, room Azie) a parallel session on "Bioinf and SysBio in practice: industrial & medical applications" is planned with talks selected by abstract submission.
About BIUP
The BioInformatics Industrial User Platform (BIUP) is a group of Dutch companies that use bioinformatics expertise and tools in research and product development.
BIUP members have a common interest in:
- informal discussions between industrial parties that use bioinformatics tools for research and product development;
- an infrastructure for joined bioinformatics research (e.g. safe data repository);
- stimulating relevant bioinformatics research;
- shaping the competences of the bioinformaticians of the future.
